In honor of National Literacy Month, Niche Book Bar and Rooted MKE, the pride of Milwaukee as its sole Black and Woman-owned bookstores, are delighted to unveil their collaborative venture with Hyfin to orchestrate a Family Literacy Fair. The fair promises to be an interactive arena where the magic of words comes alive, emphasizing the indispensability of literacy, the significance of education, and the sheer pleasure derived from immersing oneself in the world of a captivating book.

To further elevate this event, literacy institutions like Joyce’s House Education Center are slated to grace the occasion, bringing with them an array of literacy-centric services. Set against the eclectic backdrop of Radio Milwaukee at 220 E. Pittsburgh Ave., the community is warmly invited to partake in this complimentary event scheduled for November 11th, from 11 am to 2:30 pm CST. The fair promises an engaging line-up for families: a treasure trove of diverse books to browse and buy, engrossing storytime sessions, delightful crafting opportunities, and the allure of hot chocolate to savor in the crisp November air.

A Deep Dive into the Hosts:

Niche Book Bar – Born out of one ardent reader’s quest to find Black literature spanning a plethora of genres, Niche Book Bar stands as Milwaukee’s answer. This sanctuary is dedicated to spotlighting an extensive range of Black books, whether they’re fresh off the press, pre-loved treasures, locally crafted, or international masterpieces. To enrich the literary journey, patrons can indulge in an assortment of beverages and treats, ranging from aromatic coffees and teas to delectable baked goods. A touch of sophistication is added with a curated wine menu, perfectly complementing any reading choice. And while Niche Book Bar champions all genres, from timeless classics and history to fantastical worlds, they hold a special corner for young readers. A delightful addition to the Milwaukee community, the bookstore promises to be a haven for every family member. And the best part? They are soon to open their doors!

Rooted MKE – At its core, Rooted MKE is a reflection of BIPOC youth. It is a space brimming with curated titles that allow young readers to see themselves, their stories, their dreams. As a communal hub, it beckons families to come together, celebrating shared narratives, all centered around the power of literacy. Beyond being a niche bookstore catering to young readers and young adults, Rooted MKE provides academic support, hosting both individual and small group sessions. Moreover, their endeavors stretch to connecting youngsters with local artisans and creators, making literacy a holistic experience. With a vision to uplift Black and Brown youth and their families, Rooted MKE seamlessly blends storytelling with profound literacy experiences. Always on the lookout for collaborations, they ardently seek partnerships with local educational institutions, organizations, and community stakeholders, all in pursuit of a shared goal: amplifying their mission.

This Family Literacy Fair, with its emphasis on community, literacy, and shared experiences, is not just an event but a celebration. It beckons every family in Milwaukee to immerse themselves in the world of books and the myriad stories they hold.
