A new concert has been announced to celebrate the 50th anniversary of hip-hop music. “Masters of the Mic” will feature performances by notable rap artists MC Lyte, Rakim, EPMD, and Black Sheep. The event is scheduled for Friday, August 30 at the BMO Pavilion.
MC Lyte, widely regarded as one of the most respected female hip-hop artists, has achieved numerous milestones throughout her career. She was the first female rapper to receive a gold single and be nominated for a Grammy solo. Lyte has also been recognized for her influence and contributions to the genre.
Rakim, another highly influential figure in hip-hop, is known for his innovative lyrical style and delivery. His albums, including the classic “Paid In Full,” have sold millions of copies worldwide and are frequently cited as some of the greatest in the genre’s history.
EPMD, consisting of Erick Sermon and Parrish Smith, gained prominence in the late 1980s and early 1990s with their distinctive sample-based productions and laid-back rapping styles. The duo has released several successful albums and is credited with influencing the development of hardcore and gangsta rap.
Black Sheep, formed by Andres “Dres” Titus and William “Mista Lawnge” McLean, is best known for their 1991 hit single “The Choice is Yours.” The group was part of the Native Tongues collective, which included other influential acts such as A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul.
Tickets for the “Masters of the Mic” concert will be available starting Friday, April 26 at 10:00 a.m. through Ticketmaster and at the BMO Pavilion box office. The event promises to celebrate hip-hop’s rich history and the enduring impact of these pioneering artists.
