According to a story from TMJ4, a nearly century-old home on the corner of Hopkins and Courtland is being transformed into a hub for artists and community engagement in Milwaukee’s Old North neighborhood. The CR8TV House, founded by Symphony Swan-Zawadi and her husband, Joshua Liston-Zawadi, aims to provide a dedicated space for creativity, storytelling, and action.
The CR8TV House’s mission is to confront systemic barriers faced by Black and Brown artists by offering a supportive environment where they can address societal issues through their creative practices. The organization believes in the transformative power of art and community engagement and seeks to spark conversations and action through curated exhibitions and inclusive programming.
As reported by TMJ4 News, the house will feature an exhibit room, gathering space, and workshop area. Artists will have the opportunity to work, collaborate, and share their projects in this welcoming environment. The CR8TV House also plans to offer artist residencies, mentorship, and resources to empower and support local artists.
One unique aspect of the CR8TV House is its focus on the Black Family Archive, which aims to capture and preserve the essence of Black family life. This living community archive is a testament to identity and the documentation of Black stories and legacy.
Creating the CR8TV House is not just a project for Symphony Swan-Zawadi, but a profoundly personal journey. After the loss of both her parents and a poignant visit to her childhood home, she was reminded of the profound influence her parents had on her authentic and creative self. This, coupled with her extensive experience as an educator and arts non-profit executive, fueled her passion to transform her father’s house into a space that inspires, supports, and uplifts the next generation of creatives.
The CR8TV House also hosts a podcast called “The NRGY TRNSFRD Podcast,” which features conversations about how artists can help solve complex problems. Situated at the kitchen table, the podcast aims to create a safe and enjoyable space for artists to explore aspects of their practice and work.
As the CR8TV House gears up for its exhibit in the fall, artists like Leilan Lopez Balsini are optimistic about the potential for local artists to be the heart of the community and drive positive change. The CR8TV House’s commitment to accessibility and strategic location in Milwaukee’s inner city make it a promising addition to its diverse cultural landscape.
