Canadian artist Mustafa has announced his debut album, “Dunya,” which will be released on September 27th via Jagjaguwar. Coinciding with this announcement, Mustafa has unveiled a new single, “SNL,” accompanied by a self-directed music video.
“SNL,” produced by Mustafa’s frequent collaborators Simon Hessman and Rodaidh McDonald, explores themes of resilience and love in challenging environments. Mustafa explains, “‘SNL’ is about finding charm in the gloom of the hood – to love despite the circumstance, despite the worst of us.”
The forthcoming album “Dunya” will include Mustafa’s previously released singles “Name of God” from 2023, “Imaan” and “Gaza is Calling” from 2024. The New York Times’ Jon Caramanica praised “Imaan,” noting Mustafa’s unique ability to examine “isolation and longing, rendering them with beauty and, somehow, without anxiety.”
This announcement follows the recent success of Mustafa’s second Artists for Aid benefit concert in London on July 4th. The event, presented in partnership with the aid organization War Child, featured performances by various notable artists, including Blood Orange, Clairo, Daniel Caesar, Earl Sweatshirt, King Krule, and a special appearance by FKA twigs. The concert raised funds to support Gaza and Sudan, following a similar event held in New Jersey in January, which British Vogue covered.
