This week”s HYFIN’s must-listen albums include offerings from R&B songstress Ravyn Lenae, rap sensation Latto, Afrobeats star Asake, jazz collaboration between Milton Nascimento and Esperanza Spalding, abstract rapper MAVI, multi-instrumentalist Louis Cole with the Metropole Orkest, and rising R&B artist Rae Khalil.

Ravyn Lenae – “Bird’s Eye”

Chicago-based artist Ravyn Lenae returns with her sophomore album “Bird’s Eye,” marking a significant milestone in her career. The project showcases Lenae’s growth as an artist, featuring intriguingly adventurous soundscapes and personal themes. “Bird’s Eye” represents a bold step forward for Lenae, as she expands her musical repertoire and ventures into uncharted sonic territories.

Latto – “Sugar Honey Iced Tea”

Atlanta rapper Latto drops her third studio album, “Sugar Honey Iced Tea,” featuring 17 tracks and an impressive lineup of guest appearances. The album is described as a nearly frictionless listen, demonstrating Latto’s intention and effort in crafting a cohesive project. With collaborations from artists like Young Nudy, Megan Thee Stallion, and Ciara, “Sugar Honey Iced Tea” offers listeners a diverse range of sounds and styles.

Asake – “Lungu Boy”

Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Asake releases his third studio album, “Lungu Boy,” showcasing his artistic growth and global ambitions. The 17-track project features international collaborations with artists like Wizkid, Central Cee, and Travis Scott. Asake blends indigenous sounds from Lagos with diasporic influences, creating a unique fusion of Afrobeats, Fuji, Samba, Amapiano, Funk, and Hip-hop.

Milton Nascimento & Esperanza Spalding – “Milton + Esperanza”

Jazz legends Milton Nascimento and Esperanza Spalding join forces for “Milton + Esperanza,” an episodic, impressionistic album combining reworked classics from Nascimento’s catalog, new songs by Spalding, and covers of other artists. The 16-track album showcases a diverse range of musical styles, reflecting both artists’ versatility and creativity.

MAVI – “shadowbox”

Rising star in the abstract rap scene, MAVI, presents his third studio album “shadowbox.” The 14-track project, with a runtime of approximately 33 minutes, is characterized by its jazzy production and soulful lyrics. MAVI’s mature and reflective style shines through in this cohesive and engaging musical experience.

Louis Cole (with Metropole Orkest & Jules Buckley) – “nothing”

Multi-instrumentalist Louis Cole collaborates with the Metropole Orkest and conductor Jules Buckley on “nothing,” a grand orchestral project featuring 17 tracks. The album blends jazz, classical music, funk, and electronic elements, showcasing Cole’s growth as a composer and arranger. Recorded primarily live during a European tour, “nothing” captures the energy of Cole’s performances with a 50-piece orchestra.

Rae Khalil – “CRYBABY”

California-based singer and rapper Rae Khalil makes her debut with “CRYBABY,” a 13-track album that blends new age soul, R&B, pop, and classic hip-hop influences. Featuring collaborations with Freddie Gibbs and Tiana Major9, the album is characterized by its euphoric production and vivid storytelling. “CRYBABY” represents Khalil’s most introspective journey to date, exploring themes of self-reflection and personal growth.
