Film on Black women's political influence coming to milwaukee

A new documentary, “Dear America, A Letter From Black Women,” is set to tour the country and visit Milwaukee. The film, produced by the non-profit organization Project Ready, aims to highlight the significant role of Black women in American politics and encourage civic engagement.

The tour, which includes stops in several major cities across the United States, plans to feature pre-screenings of the short film, panel discussions, and appearances by special guests. Milwaukee has been named as one of the tour destinations, alongside cities such as Chappaqua, Durham, Newark, Atlanta, Savannah, New York, Baton Rouge, and New Orleans.

The documentary explores the historical and contemporary contributions of Black women to the nation’s political landscape. It interviews various activists, scholars, and changemakers, including notable figures such as Hill Harper, Dr. Martin Luther King III, Andrea Waters King, LaTosha Brown, and Lindsey Granger.

As part of the tour’s mission, organizers have set an ambitious goal of securing pledges from 100,000 Black women nationwide to vote in the upcoming election. This initiative comes at a time when a Black woman is running for president, adding particular relevance to the film’s message.

Shennell Barnes-McCloud, CEO of Project Ready, emphasized the importance of the film’s timing and message, stating that it serves as both an amplification of silenced voices and a call to action for community mobilization and civic participation.

The documentary is part of a larger campaign called The Dear America Project, which aims to mobilize Black women and their allies across the country. Those interested in attending a screening in Milwaukee or other cities can RSVP through the project’s website.

As the tour progresses, additional cities may be added to the schedule. The organizers view this documentary and its accompanying campaign as more than just a film but as a movement to empower Black women and encourage their active participation in shaping the future of American democracy.
