HYFIN, Radio Milwaukee’s Urban Alternative channel, hosted its second annual Anti-Gala on Thursday, October 10, 2024, at Turner Hall Ballroom. Hosted by TMJ4’s Shannon Sims, the event, themed after “The Wiz” in celebration of the movie and Broadway musical’s upcoming 50th anniversary, offered an evening of Afrofuturism while raising funds for Black-led media. HYFIN wants to thank our sponsors, including Bader Philanthropies, Associated Bank, WE Energies, Brewers Community Foundation, Reinhart, and The Pabst Theater Group, for their generosity in making this event a success!

The Anti-Gala commenced with a captivating dance performance featuring local youth from the YWCA. Choreographed by Milwaukee native Frank Gatson Jr., renowned for his work with artists like Beyoncé and Jennifer Lopez, the opening number set a vibrant tone for the evening.

Throughout the night, HYFIN honored local changemakers with several awards. Tiffany Tardy, President & CEO of PEARLS for Teen Girls, received the prestigious Danae Davis Award for her exceptional community contributions. Tonda Thompson, owner of She Slangs Wood, earned the Innovator Award for her groundbreaking work. The Entrepreneur Award went to Lena Cole of R&B Live for her business acumen and community impact.

In the creative realm, Juice Talk TV claimed the Creative Award for their fresh perspectives in music and news coverage. Local artist J.P., boasting over seven million Spotify streams, won the Musician Award. Emmitt James received the Artist Impact Award for his philanthropic efforts and cultural contributions. Your Move MKE was honored with the Social Impact Award for their community-focused initiatives.

The event featured culinary delights from James Beard award-winning chef Dane Baldwin of The Diplomat, Chef Zakiya Courntey of Vegan Soul, and Chef Jason Alson of Heaven’s Table. Alson crafted a cake resembling the scarecrow from “The Wiz,” adding a whimsical touch to the evening’s theme.

Brew City Soul enhanced the musical atmosphere with performances from “The Wiz” soundtrack. A fashion show by Edessa School of Fashion showcased local design talent. DJ Bizzon closed out the evening with a spectacular VJ set, keeping guests entertained into the night.

During the Anti-Gala, HYFIN unveiled its Black Small Business Initiative (BSBI), a $100,000 scholarship program. The initiative will support five Black-owned small businesses in Southeast Wisconsin with comprehensive marketing packages valued at $20,000 each. These packages include on-air promotions, digital marketing support, and educational resources.

The BSBI, presented in partnership with von Briesen & Roper, the Argosy Foundation, and Operation HOPE, aligns with Radio Milwaukee’s mission to amplify diverse voices and provide equitable solutions. Applications for the program open on October 11 and close on November 15, 2024.

HYFIN’s Anti-Gala was a vibrant celebration of Black culture and a crucial fundraiser for Black-led media. The event highlighted HYFIN’s role in fostering a more inclusive media landscape and supporting economic empowerment within Milwaukee’s Black community.

Supporting HYFIN contributes significantly to a more diverse media landscape. The station embraces a wide spectrum of Black music and culture, addressing the growing demand for authentic representation in media. This approach aligns with the evolving media landscape where Black audiences lead in consumption and influence.

The economic impact of supporting HYFIN is substantial. With Black consumers’ purchasing power projected to reach $1.8 trillion by 2024, investing in platforms like HYFIN is both culturally significant and economically strategic. The station’s focus on elevating Black enterprise creates opportunities for entrepreneurs, media professionals, and creatives.HYFIN’s initiatives, such as Grace Weber’s Music Lab, Amplifier, and the Blackity Black Holiday Market, actively shape a future where Black voices are celebrated.

The Anti-Gala is a crucial fundraiser for HYFIN’s mission. Those unable to attend can still support HYFIN’s efforts to foster inclusivity and diversity in media by making donations at HYFIN’s website. Every contribution helps HYFIN continue its work in cultural enrichment, economic growth, and social equity.

As HYFIN grows, its impact on Milwaukee’s cultural landscape becomes increasingly significant. The success of the second annual Anti-Gala demonstrates the community’s support for diverse, inclusive media and underscores the importance of platforms that amplify Black voices and experiences.
