Los Angeles-based electronic producer Steven Ellison, known professionally as Flying Lotus, has released his latest EP, Spirit Box, through Warp Records. The five-track collection is a departure from his previous work.
The EP opens with “Ajhussi,” blending Vangelis-inspired synthesizers with unexpected house music elements. The track’s shimmering beats and chipmunk vocals establish the project’s new direction.
Industry veteran Dawn Richard features on “Let Me Cook,” where her commanding vocals declare, “Let me cook slow.” Grammy-nominated vocalist Sid Sriram contributes to “The Lost Girls,” his emotive performance complementing the track’s galloping percussion.
Ellison steps behind the microphone on “Garmonbozia,” a thick, atmospheric composition. This vocal appearance adds another layer to the EP’s supernatural themes.
The closing track, “Ingo Swann,” named after the renowned parapsychologist, is a melancholic dance sensation that reinforces the EP’s departure into house music territory.
Released during Halloween, ‘Spirit Box‘ embraces supernatural and mystical themes. The timing aligns with the project’s transformative nature as Ellison continues to expand his sonic palette after nearly two decades of innovation.
