9 must-listen new albums: Tyler, The Creator, Kokoroko, Freddie Gibbs and more

This week’s HYFIN’s must-listen new albums showcase an incredible range of artistic innovation and genre-defying music. Tyler, the Creator returns with his most experimental work “Chromokopia.” EarthGang explores AI’s impact on society in their Japanese-inspired “Perfect Fantasy.”

Freddie Gibbs surprises fans with the introspective “You Only Die 1nce,” and Tuxedo brings back their signature funk on “Tuxedo IV.” Lil Uzi Vert continues their cosmic journey with “Eternal Atake 2,” while Kokoroko delivers Afro-jazz excellence in their “Get The Message” EP. Flying Lotus ventures into supernatural territory with “Spirit Box,” Tomin presents thoughtful compositions in “A Willed and Conscious Balance,” and Soul from the O offers deeply personal narratives in “Queens & Pharaohs.”

Tyler, the Creator – “Chromokopia”

Following his Grammy-winning “Call Me If You Get Lost,” Tyler, the Creator pushes boundaries with his seventh studio album. Introducing the mysterious character St. Chroma, Tyler crafts his most experimental work, featuring an impressive roster including Daniel Caesar, Thundercat, and Childish Gambino. The album masterfully blends hip-hop, R&B, and experimental elements, with Tyler handling all production under his Wolf Haley moniker. His unconventional Monday morning release strategy demonstrates his dedication to the fan experience.

EarthGang – “Perfect Fantasy”

The Grammy-nominated Atlanta duo delivers an ambitious project inspired by Japanese culture and AI’s impact on society. Featuring collaborations with Damon Albarn, Little Dragon, and Pharrell Williams, the album seamlessly blends classic hip-hop with contemporary R&B. Approached through a video game lens, the project showcases their evolution while maintaining their commitment to addressing deeper societal themes.

Freddie Gibbs – “You Only Die 1nce”

Freddie Gibbs presents a smooth, contemplative sound in this surprise Halloween release that marks a departure from his previous work. The guest-free album, executive produced by Gibbs himself, features sophisticated production with dark, bass-heavy beats. The project thoughtfully explores themes of mortality and survival, particularly evident in tracks like “On The Set” and “Wolverine.”

Tuxedo – “Tuxedo IV”

Mayer Hawthorne and Jake One return after a five-year hiatus with their fourth studio album. The dynamic duo continues their mission of delivering champagne-infused funk, collaborating with DJ Battlecat and Leroy Burgess. Their single “Back 4 More” perfectly encapsulates their signature ’80s-inspired sound while maintaining modern relevance.

Lil Uzi Vert – “Eternal Atake 2”

Following their chart-topping “Pink Tape,” Lil Uzi Vert returns with a cosmic sequel to their 2020 hit. The 16-track album features an unexpected collaboration with Big Time Rush and maintains a strong extraterrestrial theme throughout. Their innovative marketing campaign, including a 1950s-inspired teaser track and cinematic trailer, sets new standards for album rollouts.

Kokoroko – “Get The Message EP”

The London-based Afro-jazz collective’s latest EP showcases their evolution since their acclaimed debut album. Led by the single “Three Piece Suit” featuring Azekel, the four-track project pays homage to the Nigerian immigrant experience in London while maintaining their signature blend of Afrobeat and jazz influences. The release precedes their first extended US tour.

Flying Lotus – “Spirit Box EP”

Steven Ellison’s first non-soundtrack release since 2019’s “Flamagra” unexpectedly turns toward the supernatural and mystical. The EP features collaborations with Sid Sriram and Dawn Richard, showcasing FlyLo’s versatility with surprising elements like house beats and his vocals. This Halloween-timed release demonstrates his continuing evolution as a producer and artist.

Tomin – “A Willed and Conscious Balance”

The self-taught multi-instrumentalist from Brooklyn presents a thoughtfully crafted album through International Anthem. The ten-track collection perfectly balances accessibility and artistic depth, featuring introspective pieces that showcase his mastery of flute, trumpet, and alto clarinet.

Soul From The O – “Queens & Pharaohs”

The Oakland-based rapper delivers a deeply personal 10-track journey exploring love, loss, and resilience. Featuring collaborations with Durand Bernarr and Lalin St. Juste, the album incorporates family voicemails and memories into its narrative. Inspired by his parents’ love story and dedicated to his recently departed mother, the project is a powerful testament to family bonds and personal growth.
