Jean Dawson discusses new album, roots, music & growth

The eclectic Jean Dawson is the latest guest on “YESTERDAY, TODAY, TOMORROW.” This engaging interview conducted before his transcendental performance at Milwaukee’s iconic The Rave, HYFIN’s own Anthony (A-BIZ) Foster sits down with Jean Dawson, a one-of-one and uniquely dynamic artist whose latest album, the 15-track Magnum opus, Glimmer God is out right now and has been making major waves with fans and critics both salivating. Dawson, fresh off a collaboration with Lil Yachty on the track “Die For Me,” shares his excitement about performing in Milwaukee for the first time. Dawson noted he immediately appreciated the diversity he’s witnessed, expressing how the city’s vibrant Black community has made him feel at home. In his own words, “There are Black people everywhere.”

The conversation quickly shifts to Glimmer God, an album with deep and profound personal significance to Dawson. He unveils that the project is a tribute to his mother, a Mexican immigrant who used music to learn English.  Always a vital inspiration for us all, he too was inspired by the sounds she loved; Dawson crafted a record blending influences from iconic artists like the staples Prince and Michael Jackson as well as atmospheric bands like Radiohead and well-rounded legends like Bob Dylan, all the while throwing in his eclectic tastes. For Dawson, the album is a gift to his mother and a celebration of the diverse musical heritage that shaped his identity.

Throughout our conversation, Jean often reflected on his upbringing in a multicultural household, which played out in his artistry. He discusses the influence of his father, a Black man from the LBC (Long Beach, CA), and his Mexican mother, highlighting how their experiences and tastes enriched his perspective. The album bridges these cultural worlds, creating a soundscape that resonates with listeners from varied backgrounds. His pride in honoring his roots is evident as he reflects on the album’s deeply personal themes and broad appeal.

Infinite praises for Jean Dawson for creating music that connects with listeners on such an intimate level, primarily through the lens of familial and cultural influence. As you may hear in the background, some ambient sounds appear as Dawson approaches the stage. This interview underscores his excitement about sharing his music with a live audience. The chat sheds light on Glimmer God and the artist’s deep connection to his roots, making it clear that Jean Dawson is on his way to becoming a strong voice of the present and the future. Fresh off his performance at Tyler, The Creator’s immensely growing Camp Flog Gnaw Festival at Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles AND with the announcement he will be on the road with Linkin Park in 2025, our latest guest on “YESTERDAY, TODAY, TOMORROW”, Mr. Jean Dawson, is destined to shine, or in this case, Glimmer.
