Milwaukee Public Library Director Joan Johnson announced Shelly Conley as the city’s next Poet Laureate. The appointment spans from 2025 to 2026.Conley’s poetic journey began in 2003 when she first performed on stage. Her listeners consistently describe her work as gifted, inspirational, and illustrative.
Her creative portfolio includes seven appearances on Milwaukee’s National Poetry Slam Team. Conley recently published “REWIND-A CATHARTIC AUTOBIOGRAPHY,” which combines journal entries with poetry and music. As a skilled wordsmith, Conley writes across multiple genres. Her work encompasses poetry, short stories, books, and educational curricula. She frequently collaborates with local and national recording artists.
Conley brings two decades of experience working with youth and community programs. She serves as Program Director for My Sista’s KeepHer, a position she has held since 2014.In her workshops, Conley emphasizes honesty and introspection. She encourages participants to practice self-forgiveness and approach challenges with compassion.
The selection process included two distinguished runners-up. Chuck Stebelton, Special Projects Manager at Woodland Pattern, authored multiple poetry collections. His latest work released in 2023.Nikki Janzen, known as “Darlin’ Nikki,” competed as the second finalist. She holds titles as World Slam Haiku Champion and two-time Grand Slam Champion of Milwaukee.
The Milwaukee Poet Laureate program, established in 2000, operates under the Milwaukee Public Library’s direction. The Friends of the Milwaukee Public Library provides essential support for this cultural initiative.Selected poets serve two-year terms as community ambassadors for poetry. They conduct readings, workshops, and appearances throughout Milwaukee during their tenure.
The program aims to promote poetry appreciation across Milwaukee’s diverse communities. It has become a cornerstone of the city’s literary landscape.
Conley will begin her term as the city’s poetry ambassador in early 2025. Her appointment continues Milwaukee’s tradition of recognizing exceptional local talent.
