Milwaukee Community Rallies After Racist Backlash Blocks Sade Robinson Memorial

A proposed memorial for Sade Robinson faced opposition in Milwaukee this week. County officials withdrew plans for the $7,000 memorial after receiving hostile messages.

Robinson, a 19-year-old college student, died in April 2024. Her remains were discovered across Milwaukee County, including Warnimont Park.

The initial proposal included plans for a bench and tree at Warnimont Park. County Supervisor Juan Miguel Martinez introduced the measure to the parks committee.

Several committee members reported receiving messages opposing the use of tax dollars. Supervisor Jack Eckblad described many of the communications as “pretty despicable.” Committee member Felesia Martin addressed the controversy during the parks meeting. She noted concerns about the current climate of prejudice in public discourse.

Local restaurant owner Omar Shaikh announced plans to support the memorial project. Shaikh, who operates Carnevor and 3rd Street Market Hall, pledged to raise $4,000.

Sheena Scarbrough, Robinson’s mother, established the Sade’s Voice Foundation during these events. The foundation will oversee the memorial’s development once funds are secured. Sade’s Voice Foundation is a nonprofit organization operated by her family to carry out her legacy by speaking out for primarily underserved BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) individuals who are missing, murdered, or whose cases have been neglected and mishandled by media and law enforcement.

Milwaukee County Parks Director Guy Smith affirmed continued support for the project. His office will assist the family with memorial placement after private funding is complete.

The family plans to install a memorial bench at the original proposed location. They will seek county approval once fundraising goals are met. A GoFundMe campaign, now accepts public donations for the memorial.

Shaikh expects to announce specific fundraising dinner details within two weeks.
