Milwaukee Black Arts Fest MKE Returns August 2 on Summerfest Grounds

Now in its sixth year, the event highlights African heritage and Black cultural arts, combining education and entertainment with programming for the full family. Attendees can expect visual arts, dance, spoken word, literature, fashion, heritage exhibits, wellness activities, vendor markets, and an array of food offerings from the African diaspora.

Musical headliners this year include R&B artist Carl Thomas, known for hits such as “Emotional” and “Summer Rain,” along with singer-songwriter Kevin Ross and Milwaukee native Star Redd. The three perform throughout the day at the Aurora Pavilion stage.

In addition to the main music acts, the schedule includes local performers and cultural showcases. Among them are Crook & Company, Emmitt James, Star Redd (southern soul), and community acts such as Brew City Jam Session, Divine 9 Party, and Milwaukee’s largest line dance—all held at the Aurora Pavilion.

Other programming features include poetry readings, a reggae set by King Kamonzi & Kushites, an Afrobeats party by DJ Spike, a talent showcase, children’s story time, paint‑and‑sip sessions, a chess tournament, stepper showcase, and hair and fashion events celebrating African heritage.

The festival also hosts activities in the Family Village—such as Promise & Friends, Just Us & Books with Dannette Justus, African drum and dance performances, a youth fashion show, and TikTok dance challenges led by DJ Homer Blow. Additional attractions include horse rides with the Buffalo Soldiers (Milwaukee chapter), a Corvette showcase, and a lyricist lounge celebrating local poets and lyricists

Tickets start at $20 for general admission, with discounted pricing available for seniors ($15), youth ($12), and free entry for children 7 and under. A special early‑bird rate was offered through June 19. Senior citizens aged 65 and older may attend for free between 12:00 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. on the day of the event.

Attendees should note that bags are subject to search and metal detection is required for all patrons, including children. Outside food, drinks, personal chairs, skates, wagons, and pets (other than service animals) are prohibited. The event operates rain or shine, with no refunds available.

Black Arts Fest MKE continues to grow as a cornerstone event in Milwaukee’s Black community, promoting pride in African ancestry and fostering cultural connection through a curated blend of heritage, performance, and community engagement.
