The Newport Jazz Festival, a pillar of the American music scene, is set to commemorate its 70th anniversary with an impressive array of talent across various genres. This year’s event, curated in collaboration with Artistic Director Christian McBride, will take place from August 2-4 at Fort Adams State Park in Newport, Rhode Island.
The festival’s solo presentations include performances by acclaimed bandleaders and artists such as Cory Wong, Laufey, Chief Adjuah, Samara Joy, aja monet, Shabaka, and Alex Isley. In addition, the event will showcase some of the most prominent ensembles in various jazz microcosms, including Ghost-Note, Christian McBride’s Jam Jawn, Bill Frisell Four, and The Messthetics & James Brandon Lewis.
One of the most anticipated performances is the Grammy-nominated supergroup Dinner Party, featuring Kamasi Washington, Terrace Martin, and Robert Glasper. The festival will also pay tribute to the late jazz legend Wayne Shorter with a special celebration of his legacy.
Other notable acts include a unique duo performance by Makaya McCraven and Jeff Parker, the debut of Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad’s Acid Jazz is Dead project, New Orleans funk pioneers Galactic with the legendary Irma Thomas, genre-defying duo Thievery Corporation, and the ever-evolving Sun Ra Arkestra led by the nearly 100-year-old multi-instrumentalist Marshall Allen.
