Melbourne-based, genre-fluid band Hiatus Kaiyote is set to perform at Chicago’s The Salt Shed on July 9th. This follows the announcement of their forthcoming album, “Love Heart Cheat Code,” due June 28th via Brainfeeder Records / Ninja Tune. In anticipation of the album, the band has shared a new single, “Telescope,” which reflects their personal and otherworldly inspirations.
“Telescope” transports listeners to an intimate crux in the universe, offering solace through the band’s shared musicality. Each verse of the song is inspired by the most fascinating celestial objects captured by the Hubble telescope on the band members’ birthdays, ranging from the Abell (2744) galaxy cluster to a nameless star that outshone our sun.
The forthcoming “Love Heart Cheat Code” album showcases Hiatus Kaiyote’s growth and evolution. Despite being known for their complexity and maximalist approach, which earned them critical acclaim and multiple Grammy nominations, the album balances simplicity and depth. Lead vocalist Nai Palm acknowledges this shift, stating that life experiences have made them more relaxed and uninhibited in their musical expression.
The album’s creative process is characterized by a sense of deliberation and drift, with late-night jam sessions, shared meals, and experimentation with equipment and each other. The band also collaborated with other Melbourne-based musicians and the legendary producer Mario Caldato, known for his work with the Beastie Boys and Seu Jorge.
