Milwaukee’s Emmitt James gets personal on “It’s Giving Heal Black Man”

Emmitt James, a Milwaukee-based musician, will receive HYFIN’s Music Impact Award at the upcoming Anti-Gala meets The Wiz on October 10 at Turner Hall Ballroom. The award recognizes James’ contributions to music and mental health awareness.

James’ latest album, “It’s Giving Heal Black Man,” explores personal growth and therapy themes. The project reflects his journey in addressing mental health challenges, particularly relevant to Black men.

Black men face unique mental health obstacles. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, suicide is the third leading cause of death for Black men aged 15-24.

Studies show that approximately 62% of Black men have directly experienced a traumatic event in their lifetime. Despite these challenges, many face barriers to seeking help.

James’ Therapeutic Journey and Album Themes

James’ therapeutic journey forms the backbone of his latest album, “It’s Giving Heal Black Man.” The artist openly discusses his experiences in therapy, in which he sought to manage anger and assumptions affecting his relationships. James’ creative vision extends beyond traditional music formats. Alongside his album, he collaborated on a video game tied to his single “Leveled Up.” This innovative approach demonstrates James’ commitment to engaging his audience on multiple platforms.

The game allows players to progress through different levels, mirroring the song’s concept of overcoming challenges and achieving personal growth. “We wanted to create a visual representation of leveling up,” James explains. “It’s a way for fans to interact with the music on a new level.”

This creative intersection of music and gaming serves a dual purpose. First, it provides an interactive way for listeners to engage with the album’s themes. Second, it offers a unique avenue for experiencing James’ artistry and reaching new audiences.

James announced the upcoming “Emmitt James Duke Jamboree,” a charity basketball game raising winter apparel for Milwaukee’s unhoused community.

The event will feature a halftime concert with James and Genesis Renji performances.
