Acclaimed sommelier Derrick C. Westbrook, the former beverage director of Michelin-starred restaurant Elizabeth in Chicago, will lead guests through a unique sensory experience as they explore a ground-to-grape story of wine and music featuring a paired set list from DJ Odd Couple.
“Most of us don’t realize the strong relationship between music and wine,” Westbrook said. “Genres like hip-hop, pop, jazz, folk and soul music often combine new and old music samples to create a fresh and engaging product. Wine draws on the same ideology, as it uses age-old techniques fused with new ideas and approaches to create something delicious in its youth and as it ages.”
Westbrook has toured nationally, bringing Samples & Samples to City Winery locations across the country with multiple sold-out shows. He has been recognized for his professional contributions by Wine Enthusiast magazine and was named a “40 Under 40 Tastemaker,” becoming the first African-American in the wine industry to appear on the publication’s cover. Motivated by his love of people and passion for wine, Westbrook is dedicated to simplifying the wine discovery process for everyday consumers by making his events accessible and relatable.
Since HYFIN’s launch, Radio Milwaukee’s Urban Alternative station has proudly designed and staged engaging events — like Samples & Samples — that have engaged HYFIN’s listeners and the broader community.
“HYFIN is excited to bring this experience to Milwaukee for our community to enjoy,” Radio Milwaukee Digital Director Tarik Moody said. “The unique blend of wine and music is sure to expand the palate of our attendees’ engagement with both unique aspects of the event.”
