NPR's Tiny Desk Concert series recently featured cast members from the Broadway revival of 'The Wiz,' a musical that is approaching its 50th anniversary. This performance not only celebrates the present but also connects us to the rich history of American theater and Black culture that 'The Wiz' has been a part of. Cast members performed a selection of the show's songs at NPR's offices, bringing elements of the production to the compact Tiny Desk setting. The performance showcased the talent that has made "The Wiz" a recognized production since its 1974 Baltimore debut. The talented ensemble of vocalists, including Nichelle Lewis, Melody A. Betts, Alan Mingo, Jr., Kyle Ramar Freeman, Phillip Johnson Richardson, and Avery Wilson, delivered powerful performances throughout the concert. The setlist showcased the cast's vocal prowess as they brought to life iconic songs from the beloved musical. Highlights included the emotionally charged "The Feeling We Once Had," the revelatory "Meet The Wizard," the defiant anthem "You Can't Win," the introspective "What Would I Do If I Could Feel," the playful "Mean Ole Lion," and a triumphant reprise of "Ease On Down the Road." The concert concluded with a heartfelt rendition of "Home," serving as a poignant finale to the show. "The Wiz" tells L. Frank Baum's story from a Black cultural perspective. The musical has contributed to presenting Black talent and creativity on mainstream stages. Its influence extends to music, fashion, and popular culture. "The Wiz" resonates with audiences through its Black empowerment and self-actualization themes. The musical celebrates African-American culture, incorporating soul, R&B, and gospel music styles, while addressing issues of urban life and community strength. Its message of finding inner power and pride continues to inspire decades after its debut. The show plans to begin a new national tour in early 2025. This Tiny Desk appearance reminds audiences of the show's ongoing relevance. And it’s no coincidence that HYFIN, a Milwaukee organization focused on Black culture and media, has announced its upcoming event themed around the musical. The 2024 HYFIN Anti-Gala Fundraiser, set for October 10 at Turner Hall Ballroom, will feature elements inspired by "The Wiz." The anti-gala's program includes a musical performance by Brew City Soul, who will present their interpretation of "The Wiz" soundtrack. Frank Gaston will direct the opening and closing numbers. The event includes a fashion show by Edessa Fashion School and food from chefs Dane Baldwin of The Diplomat (James Beard Award Winner), Zakiya Courtney of Vegan Soul, and Jason Alston of Heavens Table BBQ.
