6 new must-listen albums: Isaiah Collier, Anycia, Partynextdoor, Audrey Powne, Vhoor, Charlie Crockett

Check out these six must-listen albums hand-picked by HYFIN for Friday, April 26, 2024. From the jazz stylings of Isaiah Collier to the future jazzy-soul grooves of Audrey Powne, the raw Americana storytelling of Charley Crockett, the boundary-pushing electronic beats of Brazil’s VHOOR, the charismatically toxic R&B of PartyNextDoor, and the unapologetic rap skill of Anycia, this week’s lineup is a testament to the spectrum of Black music.

Isaiah Collier – The Almighty

Chicago-based saxophonist and composer Isaiah Collier deliver a powerful five-part suite exploring the relationship between the Divine Source and everyday life in “The Almighty”. Collier is a multi-instrumentalist, curator, activist, and educator who has collaborated with notable artists such as Angel Bat Dawid, Chance The Rapper, Waddada Leo Smith III, and Junius Paul. Recorded using analog equipment from the legendary “A Love Supreme” sessions, this album pays homage to the jazz tradition while pushing boundaries. Collier’s expressive playing style shines throughout, making “The Almighty” a captivating listen for jazz enthusiasts.

Audrey Powne – From the Fire

UK-based artist Audrey Powne’s debut album, “From the Fire,” combines groove-laden instrumentation and layered choral harmonies.  Drawing inspiration from musical influences like Herbie Hancock and Roy Hargrove, Powne’s self-produced album explores themes of optimism and renewal. Her distinctive sound positions her as a creative force in the future jazz and soul world.

Charley Crockett – $10 Cowboy (Son Of Davy)

Crockett, known for his unique blend of country, blues, and Americana, began his musical journey as a street performer in cities like New Orleans and New York. His 13th album, “$10 Cowboy,” offers a raw and personal glimpse into the lives of everyday Americans. Recorded live to tape, the album features Crockett’s signature blend of country, blues, and Americana. His observational skills and authentic storytelling create a compelling and timeless listening experience.

VHOOR – Resenha

Brazilian electronic music producer VHOOR’s album “Resenha” showcases their unique blend of baile funk, techno, and experimental sounds. The album explores various subgenres of electronic dance music, featuring collaborations with up-and-coming artists from the Brazilian scene. VHOOR continues to push the boundaries of electronic dance music, becoming an emerging artist in the global dance music scene.

PartyNextDoor – PartyNextDoor 4 (P4)

PartyNextDoor, born Jahron Brathwaite, is a Canadian singer-songwriter and producer who has been making waves in the R&B scene since his self-titled mixtape in 2013. After signing to Drake’s OVO Sound label, PartyNextDoor released his debut album, “PartyNextDoor Two”, in 2014. Canadian singer-songwriter and producer PartyNextDoor’s fourth studio album, “PartyNextDoor 4 (P4),” promises a warm yet charismatically toxic R&B sound with subtle rapping and cluttered pop elements. PartyNextDoor described the album as his hardest and most proud work to date.

Anycia – Princess Pop That

Rising Atlanta rap star Anycia’s debut album, “Princess Pop That,” reflects her authentic self and experiences. The 14-track album features guest appearances from notable artists such as Luh Tyler, Latto, Cash Cobain, and KARRAHBOOO. With her unapologetic lyrics, infectious beats, and undeniable charisma, Anycia is definitely one to watch.
