THE INTERVIEW with YOUR OLD DROOG

Unfiltered, Unstoppable, and Undefeated: Your Old Droog on “Bread and Butter”:

Since bursting onto the scene a decade ago, Ukrainian-born, Brooklyn-bred MC Your Old Droog has built one of the most respected catalogs in modern hip-hop. Known for his relentless work ethic, dense lyricism, and top-tier collaborations with legends like Madlib, MF DOOM, Black Thought, and Method Man, Droog treats the rap game with the discipline of a master craftsman. In a recent interview with HYFIN’s Music Director, Anthony Foster, the prolific lyricist opened up about his creative process, the business of making music, and his latest release, Bread and Butter.

For Droog, crafting verses is an ongoing daily practice that spans over fifteen years of digital note-taking. From texting bars to himself on iMessage to digging up old BlackBerry voice memos from 2009 to preserve cadence and rhythm, his archives run deep. That dedication to the craft has earned him co-signs from hip-hop royalty like Mos Def and Scarface, but Droog remains grounded. He notes that while respect among elite pen-smiths leads to organic features, maintaining respect for producers and the business behind the music is what keeps his momentum going strong.

Looking ahead to the next phase of his career, Droog shows zero signs of slowing down. His main focus remains on continuous self-improvement, incorporating live instrumentation, and aiming for even bigger stages. As he prepares to hit the road and connect with fans across the country and overseas, Your Old Droog continues to prove that as long as you give 200% to your passion, the rest will always fall into place.
