9 must-listen new alubms from Pink Siifu, Qing MaDI, Ebo Taylor and more

Here is HYFIN’s must-listen new albums of the week for January 31, 2025. From Cymande’s masterful return to The Weeknd’s ambitious finale, these releases showcase artists pushing creative boundaries while honoring their musical foundations. The selections span from Nigerian alté to experimental hip-hop, presenting a vibrant snapshot of contemporary music’s evolving landscape.

Cymande – Renascence

The British funk pioneers return with an album that bridges past and present, marking their first release in 51 years. Building on their influential foundation of Afro-Caribbean rhythms and funk sensibilities, the band incorporates modern production elements while maintaining their signature sound. Collaborations with Jazzie B and Celeste add contemporary perspectives to their established formula, while tracks like “Chasing An Empty Dream” demonstrate their continued social consciousness. The album showcases their characteristic blend of wailing horns, intricate percussion, and groove-heavy bass lines.

Pink Siifu – BLACK’!ANTIQUE

Operating at the intersection of multiple genres, Pink Siifu creates a sonic tapestry that challenges conventional categorization. The album weaves together elements of free jazz, punk aggression, and soul sensibilities, creating a powerful commentary on Black identity and cultural heritage. The production maintains a raw energy while incorporating sophisticated arrangements, featuring collaborations with like-minded experimental artists. The project stands as both a celebration of Black musical traditions and a bold step into new artistic territory.

Damon Locks – List of Demands

Drawing from his work as a visual artist and educator, Locks crafts a compelling sonic collage that merges historical and contemporary voices. The album features an impressive ensemble including Ben LaMar Gay and DJ Major Taylor, creating a rich tapestry of sound that spans experimental composition and sample-based production. The project, inspired by his work at Stateville Correctional Center, demonstrates a masterful integration of archival recordings with original compositions, resulting in a powerful artistic statement.

Qing Madi – I am the Blueprint

The Lagos-based artist’s debut album showcases the vibrant evolution of Nigeria’s alté scene. Combining afrobeats, alt-R&B, and soul influences, Madi creates a fresh perspective on contemporary African music. Her smooth vocals and distinctive harmonies shine throughout the project, addressing themes of love, self-discovery, and personal growth. The album represents a promising debut from an artist already garnering international attention.

MIKE – Showbiz

The 24-track opus from the New York-based artist showcases his growth as both rapper and producer. Working under his dj blackpower alias, MIKE crafts intricate soundscapes that blend soul samples with experimental production techniques. Featuring minimal guest appearances but expanded production collaborations with Harrison and ShunGu, the album examines the realities of life as a working artist. The project’s stream-of-consciousness style creates an intimate portrait of artistic development.

INIKO – The Awakening

The Brooklyn-born artist’s debut album demonstrates their ability to transcend genre boundaries. Drawing from their classical training with the Brooklyn Youth Chorus and diverse influences ranging from trap to dancehall, INIKO creates a distinctive sound that defies categorization. The project showcases their celestial vocals while addressing themes of identity and social justice, establishing them as a unique voice in contemporary soul music.

The Weeknd – Hurry Up Tomorrow

The final chapter in his trilogy presents an ambitious 85-minute exploration of mortality and mental health. Featuring collaborations with artists like Anitta, Florence + The Machine, and Playboi Carti, the album showcases production work from industry veterans including Justice, Giorgio Moroder, and Max Martin. The project combines EDM electronics with disco influences while maintaining The Weeknd’s signature dark pop aesthetics.

Ebo Taylor, Adrian Younge & Ali Shaheed Muhammad – Ebo Taylor JID022

The legendary Ghanaian highlife pioneer collaborates with contemporary producers for a remarkable cross-generational project. Recorded at Linear Labs studio during Taylor’s first U.S. visit, the album combines traditional West African funk elements with modern production techniques. The project features Taylor’s signature vocal style and spiritual themes while incorporating psychedelic afrobeat elements and complex polyrhythmic arrangements.

Eddie Chacon – Lay Low

The R&B veteran’s latest offering, produced by Nick Hakim, presents an intimate exploration of grief and resilience. The eight-track album combines lo-fi elements with jazz influences, creating a contemplative sonic landscape. Featuring collaborations with John Carroll Kirby and subtle production touches, the project showcases Chacon’s soulful vocals while maintaining a deeply personal narrative throughout.
