What began as a playful lyric in a 2008 hit single has evolved into a multifaceted entertainment brand, and now, an upcoming animated series. T-Pain, the Grammy-winning artist and producer whose innovative use of Auto-Tune helped define an era of popular music, is developing an animated series based on “Wiscansin”—the fictional universe born from a single rhymed couplet in his song “Can’t Believe It.”
According to an exclusive report from Deadline, T-Pain’s Nappy Boy Entertainment has partnered with social media content and talent agency Viral Nation and Vancouver-based animation studio Wind Sun Sky Entertainment to bring the project to fruition. The collaboration marks T-Pain’s entry into the animation arena and represents a significant expansion of the Wiscansin brand, which has already established itself through merchandise, a fictional university website, and most notably for Milwaukee audiences, an annual music festival.
From Lyric to Cultural Phenomenon
The origin of “Wiscansin” traces back to T-Pain’s 2008 single “Can’t Believe It,” in which he rhymed “mansion” with “Wisconsin.” The unconventional pronunciation resonated with fans, creating what Catherine Winder, former Lucasfilm executive and founder of Wind Sun Sky Entertainment, described to Deadline as a moment that “snowballed from the lyric.” Winder, whose extensive credits include Star Wars: The Clone Wars, emphasized that T-Pain has cultivated this universe with “hilarious, relatable characters that are ripe for storytelling.”
The fictional Wiscansin University, which launched its website in 2018, features T-Pain as Dean Tallahassee R. Pain and offers tongue-in-cheek course listings such as “The History of GIFs at 3AM,” “Accounting for Strippers,” and “The Art of Sprung.” The site also showcases a roster of distinguished alumni—T-Pain’s musical collaborators—and various campus life activities, establishing a foundation for the narrative world the animated series will explore.
Milwaukee’s Central Role in the Wiscansin Story
While the Wiscansin brand has national reach, Milwaukee has served as its physical home since 2022. The inaugural Wiscansin Festival took place on June 11, 2022, at the Eagles Ballroom, following T-Pain’s 18-city “Road to Wiscansin” tour. The festival has grown substantially in the intervening years, with the fourth annual event held this past June 14 at The Rave/Eagles Club marking the largest iteration to date.
The 2025 festival featured a notable lineup including Colombian artist Feid, R&B vocalist Keyshia Cole, hip-hop artists Pusha T and Wale, producer and songwriter Jermaine Dupri, and DJ Diesel (Shaquille O’Neal). The sold-out event underscored the festival’s evolution from a novelty concept to a significant annual music event in Milwaukee’s cultural calendar.
Production Details and Creative Vision
T-Pain expressed enthusiasm about the project in a statement to Deadline, noting, “I’ve never been more excited to enter the animation arena with my new original series featuring all there is to love about Wiscansin. Collaborating with Viral Nation and Wind Sun Sky for the project was an easy decision as they are truly at the forefront of creators, digital entertainment, animation and interactive IP development.”
Winder emphasized T-Pain’s integral involvement in the creative process, stating, “This is T-Pain’s idea, it’s his authentic voice, and we want that woven into everything that we do. We’re working with him to figure out exactly where to go with the storytelling. He’s got strong opinions and he should have because he knows his fans and he knows his characters.”
The series is characterized as a “tongue-in-cheek, irreverent take on university life, which is exaggerated and self-aware at the same time,” according to Winder. The production timeline calls for the first short-form content to debut within nine to twelve months, with plans for both animated shorts and a full series.
Paul Telner, Head of Programming at Viral Nation, outlined an ambitious distribution strategy that extends beyond traditional media platforms. “There are so many layers to this project that we want to create, like animated shorts and an animated series,” Telner told Deadline. “The animation that Wind Sun Sky and Viral Nation put together can be shown in his live tour shows, on Roblox, and elsewhere, it’s a brand and a title that can unleash multiple content and revenue streams.”
